The Upper Canada Fibreshed has been an active affiliate in the global Fibershed network since 2013. As a grassroots network of farmers and textile artists, we collaboratively work to realize a local textile economy based on soil-to-soil principles for economic and ecological regeneration.
This presentation will provide the context of a “fibreshed” and present two examples of textile artisans in our local network working with Ontario grown natural fibres and / or dyes in their practices. Deborah Livingston-Lowe will discuss the process of acquiring Ontario grown wool fibre, developing it into yarn and using it to create finished products such as the Tweed fabric for a three piece suit, fabric for a wool flannel shirt, the Ontario Shawl Workshop and a reproduction wool carpet from the 1800s. Christopher Walker of Cabinboyknits will discuss the procurement and use of natural dyes and Canadian grown fibre as a textile artist, knitter, and natural dyer.
