Wetlands - including ponds, marshes, swamps, and peatbogs - are some of the world's most important ecosystems. They provide extensive and invaluable ecosystem services including erosion control, groundwater replenishment, carbon sequestration, and refuges for an abundance of biodiversity. Canada houses close to a quarter of the world's remaining wetlands. How can farmers, ranchers and land managers not only protect these ecosystems, but enhance and regenerate them? In this session, Line Rochefort, acclaimed wetland researcher will convey the basics on why these environments are so critical and their potential to be restored. We will also hear from ALUS Canada, an organization that helps farmers and ranchers produce ecosystem services on their land and allows them to be compensated for it.
