With renewed interest in the potential of soils to store carbon, there has been a great deal of research and new evidence into the nature of soil organic matter (SOM). This presentation will outline some of these emerging paradigms around SOM dynamics and discuss how these new findings may be translated into practical strategies that can be applied in-field to build SOM. Soils rich in organic matter typically exhibit enhanced soil functionality and this provides an ideal foundation to improve soil health and transition production systems toward a more regenerative and agroecological approach.
